THE CHARACTER: Norman schwarzkopf silver was the commander of coalition forces that liberated Kuwait from Iraqi occupation during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The plan of attack designed by him, along with his staff, was a total success: fake a landing in Kuwait that would appeal to the coast to the Iraqi defenses and attack Iraq by the left flank. This managed to cut the communication between Iraq and Kuwait, directly threatened and forced to Baghdad in just four days, Saddam Hussein ordered a ceasefire. His father, the same name, had been at West Point and later was appointed to the New Jersey State Police until, during World War II, he was sent to Tehran as a military adviser to the Shah. On his return, with the rank of major, continued teaching at West Point. In 1968, as a lieutenant colonel, attended the Command and General Staff College at Leavenworth (Kansas) and then was sent back to Vietnam, this time in command of the 198 th Infantry Brigade of the 3rd Division to be awarded by their performance with the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and three times schwarzkopf silver STAR. Upon his return, in 1971, realized that this war's unpopularity was generated in the American civil society. schwarzkopf silver continued his career in various destinations, getting to brigadier general in 1. 978. His promotion to lieutenant general arrived in 1986 and two years later a general, was appointed Commander in Chief of U. S. Central Command (Air Force Base MacDill, Florida) and head of the Middle East area. He was Commander in Chief of U. S. troops during Operation Desert Shield to deter Iraq, after invading Kuwait, did the same with Saudi Arabia. On 17 January 1991 began Operation Desert Storm with a bombing campaign that lasted six weeks and a ground offensive that lasted four days and consisted of 680,000 soldiers, 2,000 tanks and supported by 1,800 planes. The success was complete and was accompanied by numerous press conference to "inform public opinion" and get to have their support. After the campaign, Schwarzkopf became a national hero. He retired in August 1991 and in 1992 published his biography, "I Need To Be A Hero".
